THE FURNACE OUTLET | HVAC CALCULATOR

Heat Pump Repair vs. Replacement Calculator

Should you repair your existing heat pump or invest in a new system? Compare upfront costs, energy savings, future repairs, and long-term ownership expenses.

Before You Begin

Use contractor estimates and your actual utility bills wherever possible. This tool compares projected costs and provides decision guidance; it does not diagnose equipment condition or guarantee future savings.

1. Existing Heat Pump Information

The remaining-life estimate is an assumption, not a prediction. Ask your technician whether parts availability, compressor condition, corrosion, or refrigerant issues could shorten the system's useful life.

2. Replacement Heat Pump Costs

Include ductwork modifications, electrical upgrades, permits, controls, and other required work. Enter only incentives you expect to qualify for and receive.

3. Energy Consumption & Operating Costs

Include heating, cooling, and auxiliary electric heating in both annual consumption estimates. Compare the same home, comfort settings, and typical weather conditions. Efficiency ratings alone cannot reliably determine annual kWh savings.

4. Maintenance & Future Repairs

Future repair allowances are expected annual averages, not guaranteed bills. Do not include today's quoted repair in the annual allowance. Consider warranty coverage and service history when estimating future repairs.

5. Analysis Settings

Model assumption: If the repaired system reaches its estimated remaining life during the analysis period, the repair pathway includes a future replacement. The model uses the entered new-system cost, inflated to that future year, without assuming a future rebate. Both pathways are compared over the same period.

How to Use the Heat Pump Repair vs. Replacement Calculator

Enter your heat pump's age, the quoted repair cost, and its estimated remaining service life. Next, provide the installed cost of a replacement system, available incentives, annual electricity consumption for both systems, and expected maintenance and repair expenses. Choose a comparison period to see how the two decisions may affect your long-term costs.

When Does Heat Pump Replacement Make Sense?

Replacement may become more attractive when repair costs are substantial, reliability is deteriorating, replacement parts are difficult to obtain, or a new system offers meaningful energy savings. However, a properly functioning heat pump with a manageable repair and several years of expected service life may still be economical to keep. The best decision depends on verified equipment condition, comparable installation quotes, and realistic operating-cost assumptions.

Educational Disclaimer

This calculator is a financial planning and educational tool, not a diagnostic assessment. Equipment life, repair frequency, future energy prices, efficiency, rebates, and installation expenses are uncertain. The model simplifies future equipment replacements and does not include financing, taxes, resale value, or every possible ownership cost. Obtain professional HVAC evaluations and written estimates before deciding.
