Why Furnace Size Matters
Hey, Mike here. One of the most common questions I get is:
“What size furnace do I need for my home?”
And my answer is always the same:
“It depends—on your square footage, insulation, windows, and more.”
But don’t worry. I’m gonna make it real simple for you.
Because when it comes to choosing an R-32 gas furnace, bigger isn’t always better. An oversized furnace will short-cycle (turn on and off constantly), wasting energy and wearing out early. Undersized? You’ll never be comfortable.
🔢 General BTU Guidelines by Square Footage
Here’s a rough estimate for a well-insulated home:
Home Size (Sq. Ft.) | BTU Output Needed |
---|---|
1,000–1,200 | 40,000–50,000 |
1,300–1,500 | 50,000–60,000 |
1,600–1,800 | 60,000–70,000 |
1,900–2,200 | 70,000–80,000 |
2,300–2,500 | 80,000–100,000 |
This is just a starting point. If you live in a colder climate or have older windows or insulation, you’ll need to go up a notch.
🛠️ What Affects Sizing (Beyond Square Footage)?
Here are some other factors that impact how many BTUs you’ll need:
-
Climate Zone: A home in Minnesota needs more heating power than one in Tennessee.
-
Ceiling Height: Vaulted ceilings = more air to heat.
-
Window Quality: Drafty, single-pane windows bleed heat.
-
Ductwork Condition: Leaky ducts = wasted BTUs.
-
Home Age & Insulation: Older homes often need more furnace power unless retrofitted.

🧠 Understanding Furnace Efficiency
Here’s the catch: BTU input isn’t the same as BTU output. That’s where AFUE comes in.
-
AFUE = Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency
-
A 96% AFUE furnace puts 96 cents of every heating dollar into your home.
So a 100,000 BTU furnace at 96% AFUE gives you 96,000 BTUs of usable heat.
Higher AFUE = more comfort, less waste.

🔄 Should You Upgrade Your Furnace and AC Together?
Short answer? Yes—if they’re both older.
Modern R-32 systems are designed to work as a matched set, sharing the blower and maximizing energy savings. It also saves you on install costs and downtime.
If your AC is from 2005 and the furnace is from 2022, you’ll miss out on the synergy today’s systems offer.
